Target Your Child Support
Target will be raising the minimum amount of money it pays employees to twice the current legal minimum wage by 2020. The current minimum wage is $7.25. This is the income used by default almost for many low income wage earners. Target's goal is to have the minimum amount of money it pays all its store employees be $15 per hour by 2020.
On top of that, Target wants to raise the minimum amount of money it pays its store employees in 2017. Their goal for 2017 is to pay all of their store employees a minimum of $11 per hour. This includes 100,000 temporary workers Target will be hiring for the holiday season.
This presents an interesting issue for people who pay and receive child support in Tennessee and Georgia. Say your three year review comes up, and you have been working at Target, your child support could be going up. Also, let's say someone in a child support case files for a modification, your child support could be going up.
Keep in mind Target will be raising their minimum salary over the course of three years. That means potentially one's child support could change each time their salary changes at Target. Target employees 323,000 people at its stores; the equivalent of about 1 in 1,000 people in the United States. As America's largest private employer, Walmart raised their minimum pay to $10 per hour.
Target is telegraphing where they will be in a few years. One analyst feels this is Target's way to create a better customer experience and compete with online retailers. As previously stated in a past blog post, the rise of technology presents some interesting issues to child support payers and recipients.
If you are competing against computers, such as online retailers, what happens when you lose your job because of an increase in technology, but your child support still continues? If one has no money via job loss, they generally will not pay their child support. However, their child support obligation will likely still occur, with or without money via job loss.
